People say that love turns into hate. I have never been able to believe that.
If you can truly hate someone you once loved, I wonder what the relationship was built on. Maybe there was possession, expectation, or attachment mixed into what you called love.
The love I understand through the Holy Spirit can stay in you after a relationship ends. You can accept the distance and avoid wishing destruction on the person who left. You can remember what they did and choose to leave them alone.
What I feel afterward is closer to pity for the way things ended. I wish the story had gone differently. I grieve what the relationship could have become. I may need to keep my distance, and I can still hope the other person finds healing somewhere beyond me.
We may never speak again. I may never allow that person back into my life. I still do not need to hate them.
