If they cannot control you, they may decide to hate you.
Dislike can have many honest reasons. We get things wrong. We hurt people. Sometimes criticism is the truth arriving in packaging we would never have chosen.
I have also seen people become angry when somebody stops obeying them.
Everything seems peaceful while you are predictable, agreeable, and available on demand. Then you set a boundary, form your own opinion, or stop asking for permission. Suddenly, they call your independence arrogance, your quiet disrespect, and your refusal betrayal.
That reaction can make you question yourself. When it happens, I think it is worth asking what kept the relationship peaceful before. Sometimes the answer is simply that you used to do what the other person wanted.
Somebody who loves you may disagree with your choices. They will still recognize that your life belongs to you.
